Finding one's roots is at the heart of the book. Another example of critical contributions to the development of country by immigrants, Ukrainians in this story.
As a native Seattlite, Mysterious Builder of Seattle Landmarks was an interesting and informative exploration of the history of so many Seattle icons and public works. I regularly tell people I meet in the city about the various buildings Hans Pederson worked on, and feel seriously enriched when I visit local sites like the Ballard Locks, knowing that Hans had his hands all over this project.
This was also a deeply personal story about family ties, generational differences, and the nature of the relationship between a mother striving for an A-1 future for a daughter with other dreams of her own. It's also a unique view into the changing times before World War 2, when expatriated families could travel the world for a father's work. It speaks to an entirely different society, a long history of company men hosting their families abroad while they conducted business, which was coming to an end as WWII began.
A fascinating glimpse behind the skyline of Seattle. A very informative and scholarly work. Worth reading,
